Improtango is a way of exploring movement improvisation using elements of contemporary dance and tango. It focuses on the discovery of new forms of expression and communication. Working in pairs we practise the basic skill needed to communicate clearly and directly, how to give and create space for you and your partner to move into, how to give impulses and how to use those impulses to move in space and create movements and we also explore how to be actively passive and passively active while dancing. The exercises are broken down to simple forms that develop and become more complex. They help to develop balance of inner and outer awareness, active and passive participation and an understanding of the role of form and content in improvisation. If the improvisor doesn’t find the balance between these elements she is not open to the moment and is not aware of all the possibilities she has at that moment. When we stand in balance every direction is open to us. When we are in the moment we are free to express what is arising in that moment in relation to inner and outer impulses and we have a clear intention that moves the improvisation forward. The tango in Improtango doesn’t emphazise specific steps or tradional forms rather takes elements such as impulse, following-leading, giving space, spiralling and interrupted movement. Improtango broadens the dancer’s range and quality of movement, makes her more creative and receptive when working with a partner. It also give tools to create and choreograph movement material. Improtango is suitable for professional dancers and people with little dance experience.
